 Personal Edition (PE) provides a personal fax gateway for the
Apple PowerTalk
 environment.
NSTF PowerFax provides the fax tools to build upon the tightly-integrated

 PowerTalk system.  PowerFax combines with PowerTalk to meet the
Oexpanding communications needs of individuals, work groups, and organizations
"now, and as they change over time.
PSTF PowerFax simplifies address book handling, allowing fax addresses to be kept
Qwith other contact information in PowerTalk catalogs.  STF PowerFax is compatible
with
. 3.0 when additional fax capability is needed.
HLTo use STF PowerFax, you must first be able to use the following features of
HPowerTalk:  Mailbox; Catalogs; Mailer; and AppleMail.  Please review the

 Overview
OSTF PowerFax is a key element of a new era in communications software
 a truly
Pcollaborative work group environment.  When combined with the built-in messaging
Fand file-sending capabilities of PowerTalk, a powerful and easy to use
;communications system becomes available to Macintosh users.
PStandard PowerTalk addressing protocols are used to send faxes
 automatically
Tby simply selecting a user or destination.  If the preferred method of communication
Ufor the selected user is fax, the document will be converted to fax format and sent
&without further input from the sender.
QPowerFax places incoming faxes in the user
s mailbox In Tray.  A received fax can
Jbe Forwarded as a fax through the STF PowerFax gateway.  PowerTalk type-in
Faddressing, available in the Mailer, allows faxes to be sent to a new
    temporary
HGaddress by simply typing the fax number into the Mailer.  New permanent
4addresses may also be created in a Personal Catalog.
FaxView
 Overview
QThe FaxView application is used to view faxes that are received in the Mailbox In
STray.  FaxView provides a powerful set of tools for viewing and forwarding received
fax communications.
FWhile viewing, you can use the
magnification
 pop-up menu to select a
Tmagnification level from 50% to 2400% of actual size, allowing you to fit the entire
8fax on screen or make even the smallest details legible.
HThe Smooth command makes faxes easier to read, displaying the image with
Tmultiple grayscale levels when a color or grayscale monitor is available.  Smoothing
>improves text readability and the clarity of grayscale images.
RAdjustable print-break lines allow selection of any portion of a fax for printing.
OPrint breaks may be placed wherever desired
 very useful when extra-long pages
are received.
UYou may select all or a portion of a fax to be copied and pasted into other documents
via the clipboard.
TPage rotation buttons allows fax pages to be rotated or flipped to make it easier to
Qread pages that were received backwards or rotated.   Rotating a page 90
 left or
Lright from portrait view makes it easier for you to read a fax page when the
>contents (such as a spreadsheet) are in landscape orientation.
JThe Add Mailer command in the Mail menu adds a PowerTalk mailer, making it
Jeasy to forward a copy of a received fax to another address via PowerTalk.

TThis section explains how to install, configure and start using PowerFax. Additional
Mand advanced options are explained in the
Configuring STF PowerFax
 section.
Requirements:
LSTF PowerFax requires the following resources to operate.  Please check your
"system before installing PowerFax.
'System 7.1.1 (or later) with PowerTalk
)A Macintosh II (68020) or faster computer
>A compatible fax modem (preferably attached to the modem port)
'2.5 Mb hard disk space for installation
E320 Kb of RAM when PowerFax is running, 420-650 Kb when sending a fax
-1200 Kb of RAM to use the FaxView application
 Notes:
IWhen fax services are not needed, you can disable PowerFax using the
 command in the Finder
s special menu to regain some memory.
JDisable dithering of color images on the Outgoing info page if you need to
%minimize the use of RAM when sending.
Before Installing
If a copy of
22.x is installed and in use on the Macintosh, all
components must be removed.
+2.x and PowerFax will not operate correctly
H%when installed on the same Macintosh.

Ithen Use.  Failure to follow this procedure will result in unexpected and
1unusual results when you attempt to use PowerFax.

Sending the Registration
QThe STF PowerFax Registration is an AppleMail letter that will open automatically
Nwhen you restart your Macintosh after adding and configuring PowerFax service.
GThe letter is pre-addressed with an 800 number (for registration only).
Note:
JIf you are sending the registration from a location which does not support
KU.S. 800 numbers, please edit the STF electronic address information in the
business card
 located in the STF PowerFax
 folder to dial the correct
1number, [phone], and readdress the letter.
HLRegistration is important because only registered STF PowerFax users will be
Vnotified and be eligible for special discounts on the full-featured commercial version
*of STF PowerFax when it becomes available.
RPlease fill in all information fields in the STF PowerFax Registration letter then
Nchoose Send from the Mail menu to send the Registration.  When the Send dialog
box appears, click OK.
NOTE:
KIf the Registration fails to send properly, there may be a problem with the
Hsoftware configuration.  Please check the configuration settings and try
Jrestarting the Macintosh.  Then re-open the Registration letter in the STF
PowerFax
 folder and try again.

 requires additional configuration to take full advantage of the
Kcollaborative work environment.  The minimal configuration explained in the
Getting Started...
 section is acceptable in most installations, but additional

EThe PowerTalk Key Chain contains essential configuration and password
information for
< PowerTalk (AOCE) services.  Before PowerFax software can be

Snapshot Format
RWhen imaging a letter in Snapshot format, the layout is determined by the original

Ris the default setting if the main display is color-capable.  To view in black and
white, deselect Smooth.
Mail Menu Commands
RThe mail menu is used to access the features of PowerTalk to resend faxes to other
recipients.
Add Mailer/Remove Mailer
NChoose Add Mailer from the Mail menu to add a standard PowerTalk mailer to the
Nviewed fax document.  Add Mailer will be replaced in the menu by Remove Mailer
Pwhich can be used to remove the mailer.  When a fax has been addressed using the
Kmailer it can be resent as a fax or forwarded to another PowerTalk service.
LThe mailer allows you to type in subject information, add recipients, attach
Renclosures, and routing of the document.  PowerTalk will send the document to each
Precipient using the preferred method for each address.  When sending to multiple
Precipients, it is important to select multiple formats in the Send dialog.  Each
QPowerTalk service will then be able to use its preferred format for best results.
SChoose Send to send the fax to the addresses listed in the mailer.  When sending to
Sa STF PowerFax electronic address, it is best to use STF Fax format for the letter,
Vas it will eliminate the need to re-image the file.  When sending to any other type of
Paddress, it will usually be best to select Snapshot format, which will allow the
Vrecipient to view the letter without the FaxView application.  If the fax will be sent
?using multiple PowerTalk services, both formats should be used.
Forward
NChoose Forward to add new recipients to whom the fax should be forwarded.  The
Jpreferred format is STF Fax format, which requires that the recipient have
NFaxView to view the document.  Faxes may also be forwarded in Snapshot format,
Lwhich will allow them to be viewed by a recipient who does not have FaxView.

Arranging Labels and Attributes
OThe text field containing the labels and attributes may be moved, rearranged or
Sbroken into separate fields.  Different fonts, sizes and styles may be used for the

Nthe attribute variable name must always be spelled exactly as in the template.
Modifying Attributes
SAttributes must always be entered as they are in the template.  The proper form is:

Sharing the Serial Port
MWhen PowerFax is set to receive faxes, it must keep the port open and monitor
Gcontinuously for incoming faxes.  This can create a conflict with other
Kcommunications applications, such as Apple Remote Access (ARA) or PowerTalk
SDirect DialUp Mail (DialUp), that also need to monitor the port for incoming calls.

Set-Up Options:
IWhen using the Apple Express Modem:  The Express Modem implements its own
Vfeatures, similar to those of Line Manager, for call discrimination and sharing of the
Pserial port.  When using the Express Modem more than one Server-Type application
Smay remain active.  With the Express Modem connected to the GeoPort, configure data
0communication application(s) to use the GeoPort.
SOtherwise, only one active Server-Type application may be used. Other PMSAM
s, like
SPowerFax, can be made inactive by unchecking their boxes in the
 command in
the Finder

Turning On Line Manager
When you install PowerFax
6software, the Line Manager will default to Off even if
HPyour modem is able to provide the necessary call discrimination.  To enable Line
 Manager, install PowerFax, then:
KClick the
Other settings
 button on the Outgoing info page of the PowerFax
Dconfiguration dialog in the Key Chain.  Select the Connection panel.
TClick the On button for Line Manager.  (If your modem does not support Line Manager,
this button will be inactive.)
RIf you are using Apple Remote Access (ARA), open the Remote Access setup panel and
uncheck the Answer calls
4checkbox.  You should do this any time you turn Line
VManager on or off.  This will prevent ARA from trying to open the modem port after the
Srestart (which would prevent Line Manager from accessing and controlling the port).
ARA can be set to answer again
after
 the restart if Line Manager
is to hand-off calls.
NOTE:
EWhen using DialUp, select
 from the Finder
s Special menu and
Kuncheck its box to disable it because it has no option for
not answering.
;After restarting, it will need to be re-enabled to be used.
Restart your computer.

UThe available ports are listed.  If Line Manager is turned on, the icon of the actual
Aport it is controlling will be replaced with a Line Manager icon.
IMPORTANT NOTE
GIf you are using a PowerBook, the port icon will not be replaced if the
internal port is selected.
HPIf your modem supports Line Manager, the On/Off buttons will be activated, and a
Nmessage will appear in the status box indicating that Line Manager may be used
Pwith your modem.  If the modem is able to use Line Manager, but it is not active
O(perhaps because the modem was turned off) an Activate button will appear above
Tthe status box.  Click the Activate button to enable Line Manager.  If activation is
&successful, the button will disappear.
PIf your modem does not support Line Manager, a message will appear in the status
Qbox indicating that it is not available, and the On/Off buttons will be inactive.
Line Manager Errors
IIf Line Manager encounters a problem trying to communicate with the modem
M(usually because it is turned off or incorrectly connected) a message will be
Sdisplayed.  Perform the action suggested in the dialog to remedy the problem.  Then
Bopen the Connection Settings  panel and click the Activate button.

OWhen PowerFax encounters an error in sending a fax the error is reported to the
RMailbox In Tray.  There are two types of error reports:  Mailbox errors and Letter
errors.
Mailbox Errors
MErrors that involve the interaction of the PowerFax gateway and the PowerTalk
Ssystem software are reported in the Mailbox In Tray or Out Tray as explained in the
Status
 In Tray and Out Tray
 section.  An error icon will appear in the upper
Tright corner to indicate a problem sending the letter.  Click the icon to review the
?problem report for the services that have encountered an error.
1There are three kinds of PowerTalk Mailbox error:
Correctable Errors
LOperation of the STF PowerFax Gateway will be suspended until the problem is
Ncorrected and the Resolve button is clicked.  Restarting the computer may also
Qresolve some problems, but the error message will remain until the Resolve button
is clicked.
Informational
NOperation of the STF PowerFax Gateway is not suspended.  Action is usually not
Qrequired.  Clicking Resolve will make the message disappear, but has no effect on
the reported problem.
Warning
NOperation of the STF PowerFax Gateway is not suspended.  Action may or may not
Tbe required.  Clicking Resolve will make the message disappear, but has no effect on
the reported problem.
Letter Errors
LLetter errors are reported verbally, if possible, or as a number code in the
OPowerTalk Mailbox for returned mail that could not be transmitted to the proper
Precipients.  A thumbs-down icon will appear next to each failed recipient in the
returned document
s mailer.
.To determine the reason for a returned letter:
ZLocate and select the failed letter in the Mailbox In Tray.  Failed letters will have an X
through the icon.
